Old Town
In the Warsaw Old Town, like many other places in Europe, you are going to spend most of your day sightseeing. Among Castle Square and Old Town Square Market, Stare Miasto is the most picturesque area of the city. The ancient city wall remains most of the Old Town. Now, Old town has some pedestrian streets and some restaurants, bars, and cafes too.
Now, you may expect Old Town as the most common living place for visitors. The number of living places for a visitor is rather limited in the Old Town itself. Other than apartments, there is only a few hostels and hotels in this area.
But you don’t have to feel disappointed. Thanks to the public transport system, it is easy to visit Warsaw’s Old Town from any other place you are staying. There are a major bus stop and tram stop below Castle Square which goes directly to the city’s Old Town.
Srodmiescie (and NowySwiat): City Center and Warsaw New Town
Srodmiescie consists of a large part of Warsaw city centre. Srodmiescie is a hotspot for business, politics, entertainment alike. Moreover, the history of the city began here. Srodmiescie is also connected to other Warsaw neighbourhoods. Thus, it is a good starting point for trips around Poland and also for sightseeing. There are two stations here. The well-known one is the Warsaw Central Station (Warszawa Centralna). It is one of the best-staying places in Warsaw thanks to its position and easily accessible public transport system.
Surely a variety of people set about their day. There are many excellent places for visitors. We recommend stopping by a Wedel café. They are a hallmark chocolate manufacturer in Poland. Pro tip: don’t forget to try Wedel’s great hot chocolate!
To get a local vibe taking a walk through the OgrodSaski garden is a great choice. Then, drinking a cocktail at Zamieszanie bar, or grabbing a meal at Der Elefant is also a good idea. Now, head towards Nowy Swiat. This is where you’d find a mix of new and old boutiques, hostels, and bars. Also, be sure to stop by Pawilony. It is a notable tiny street where you can find 20 different bars!
Praga
✓ The best area to stay for nightlife & alternative culture
What to do if the Old Town tourist trappings or the modernism of the central area doesn’t appeal you? Choose Praga your home-base for Warsaw tour!
Praga was infamous as one of the most notorious cities with crimes and poverty. Now, Praga has slowly become one of the city’s coolest area owing to the creativity of numerous artists. Unlike most of the city, Praga was away from destruction in World War II. Many of the pre-war factories and warehouses found new vigour as night clubs and art galleries!
On top of its status as the Warsaw alternative culture centre, Praga is gaining fame as a great eating place. Zabkowska and Targowa offer a particularly good choice of local cuisine and drink.
Given its oast status, why would you risk staying in Praga? Well, the neighbourhoods here have attractive, alternative criteria to them. Many public tours bring tourists to Praga specifically. The PGE Narodowy Stadium is also close-by. Many sports events and concerts take place here. Staying close by is important if you are visiting Warsaw for attending an event at the stadium. Although most living options are apartments, you will also find many well-rated hostels in Praga!
Downtown North
Are wondering where most of the accommodation of Warsaw is? Well, in Northern Downtown, you would find most of them! SrodmiesciePółnocne is the large district here that starts from the southern corner of the Old Town to the Warsaw Central Station. The Vistula River borders this district, and it has some popular spots too. For instance, the Presidential Palace, the Palace of Culture and Science, and the big street of Nowy Swiat. You can’t resist staying in the downtown area of Warsaw!
If you want convenience, Downtown is an ideal place. It offers so many big transit points along with restaurants and other attractions. It is walking distance from Warsaw from the bus or train stand or with metro and tram stop. It’s not even surprising that most of the hotels or hostels of the city are here. The accommodation prices here are also less than that of Warsaw’s!
The only downside of staying at Srodmiescie is that its the busiest area of Warsaw. Search for a further away place if you seek peace and tranquillity. I personally preferred the hostels in Srodmiescie. It is a well-located and comfy hostel to stay in.
Powisle:
The Riverside Area of Warsaw is a Local Favourite!
When I stayed in Warsaw, Powisle was not the most fashionable place to explore. It may not still be appraised among the ‘official’ major neighbourhoods in Warsaw. but it’s worth mentioning — and while it may not be the best place to stay in Warsaw. But it is definitely worth a visit, especially during summer! However, it has changed transformed greatly in recent times. Now, it is turning into one of the favourite hangout places for locals. And its beauty is unparalleled in the summer.
It was a poverty-stricken part of Warsaw. Nor it was much of an area to talk about leaving all the other areas of Central Warsaw. Emerging from the past conditions, Powisle is now a high-spirited and lively hotspot in Warsaw. On a comfortable and warm summer evening, grabbing a refreshment at Cud nad Wisla or Post 511 is not a bad idea. There are many pop up bars that are coming and going each year too. Relaxing on a deckchair in the evening by the water is not a bad idea either!
Mokotow
✓ The best area to stay for relaxation & more a local experience
Are you looking for a quiet place to stay in Warsaw? Head towards the southern Srodmiescie to Mokotow district! It is a quieter and more comfortable alternative to the regular Warsaw accommodations. However, Mokotow is less concentrated in regard to the major tourist sites or the buzzing of other Warsaw central areas. This district is mostly composed of residential areas. Thus, it is an ideal place to stay for any traveller keen on experiencing the local Warsaw life without much fuss and crowd.
Mokotow is a less thrilling yet extremely beautiful, comfortable, and peaceful place. Moreover, it is a very favourable location that has quick and simple access to the Central Warsaw city. There are some international embassies and major businesses in Mokotow. Still, it remains mainly as a residential area with many parks, café, and options for shopping.
For tourists, it is a great place for short stays. It has a lesser buzz like the Central Warsaw with a rather cheap accommodation price than the Warsaw Old Tow hostels and hotels.
The MorskieOko Park and the Czerniakowskie Lake are special attractions of Mokotow. Many tourists find these places extremely amusing. It’s also an eminent place if you want to get a taste of the local cuisine. Do visit Warsaw’s famous ‘Bar mleczny’ or the “milk bars”. This style of cafeteria-type restaurants hails from communist era of Poland. They were originally meant to provide cheap yet hearty homemade style food to workers.
Wilanow
Extravagant & Glamorous with Former Homes of Royalty
Looking at the best places to stay in Warsaw, Wilanow is a bit off the track for sure. However, this part of Warsaw is great for sightseeing. And you are better off choosing a hotel or hostel in the old town. Still, you can visit this prestigious neighborhood when you have time!
Keep one thing in mind, though. It is slightly far away from Central Warsaw. It is about eight miles away from the Old Town. But you can come here easily by taking a bus or a bike. However, there is no metro station or tram on this route. It is known as a posh Warsaw neighborhood. Only the wealthy and famous people call it home. It is also home to the famous Wilanow Palace Warsaw. Called ‘the Polish Versailles’, it is, without a doubt, an impressive place with a breathtaking garden and a mesmerising lake. This setting makes Wilanow Palace one of Europe’s most noteworthy extravagant buildings. On a warm sunny day, it is a perfect setting spot for a stroll or a picnic. Spending an evening with children here is also ideal. Moreover, a four-minute walk from the Wilanow Palace is the Poster Museum. It is definitely a miss if you don’t visit it!
